Dr. Bijan Mobasseri joined SDi in 2025 as a Senior Principal Engineer. His primary responsibilities include providing technical direction and leading innovation, serving as a subject matter expert and advisor to senior leadership, offering technical guidance on technology strategy, collaborating with other technical teams, mentoring and coaching, and authoring and reviewing high-level technical documents and proposals.
Before joining SDi, Bijan held academic appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Villanova University, serving as assistant professor, associate professor, and professor from 1984 to 2025. He also served as the department chair from 2017 to 2024. His research interests include waveform design for low probability of intercept (LPI), electronic warfare (EW), secure communications, radar and sonar signal processing, radiometric identification of signals for spectrum management and surveillance, signal classification for signals intelligence (SIGINT), integrated sensing and communication, and information embedding in cover signals. In 1999, he was an Air Force Summer Faculty Fellow at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Information Directorate, Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, New York, where he developed methods for embedding information directly into compressed bitstreams. This research was subsequently funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). In 2007, he was awarded the Navy Summer Faculty Program at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), Division Newport, where he pioneered acoustic watermarking of sonar pings. This work received the U.S. Navy American Security Challenge Award for Licensable Research. Follow-up funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) led to a U.S. Navy patent in 2012. In 2013, he was on sabbatical leave at NUWC to support sea trials of the acoustic watermarking algorithm developed earlier. In 2017, he was awarded the Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship at AFRL, Space Vehicles Directorate, Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The project focused on developing a new class of waveforms for low probability of intercept (LPI) communications. He received a follow-up fellowship in 2019 to perform field testing of the proposed LPI waveform, carried out on the Sandia Crest–Kirtland AFB terrestrial link. In 2024, he contributed to the winning SDi Phase I and II Navy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) proposals on acoustic watermarking.
Bijan earned his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and has authored more than 100 journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. Bijan currently lives in King of Prussia, PA, with his wife, Fatima. They have three grown sons who work in finance, software engineering, and construction management. Bijan enjoys traveling, road trips, hiking and outdoor activities, photography, and riding his motorcycle.
